The Start, Book 1
At the start of the world, when God made the sky and earth, the earth had no
form or void, with the dark on the face of the deep, and a great wind that
swept the top of the sea. God said, "Let there be light," and there was
light; and God saw that the light was good, and he put light from the dark.
He called the light day, and the dark night. So eve came, and dawn came,
the first day.
God said, "Let there be a vault in the seas, to keep sea from sea." So God
made the vault, and kept the sea down from the vault from the sea on top of
it, and so it was; and God called the vault the sky. Eve came, and dawn
came, a next day.
God said, "Let the sea down from the sky come into one place, that there may
be dry land"; and so it was. God called the dry land earth, and that sea he
called the seas; and God saw it was good. Then God said, "Let the earth
have fresh growth, let there be on the earth plants which bear seeds, fruit
trees which bear fruit each with the seed of its kind." And so it was; the
earth had fresh growth, plants each with the seed of its kind and trees each
with fruit with the seed of its kind; and God saw that it was good. Eve
came, and dawn came, a third day.
God said, "Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to keep day from
night, and let them serve as signs both for the days and for the times of
the years. Let them too shine in the vault of the sky to give light to the
earth." So it was; God made the two great lights, one great to lead the day
and one less to lead the night; and with them he made the stars. God put
these lights in the vault of the sky to give light on earth, to lead the day
and night, and to keep light from the dark; and God saw that it was good.
Eve came, and dawn, a fourth day.
God said, "Let the seas teem with life, and let birds fly from the earth in
the vault of the sky." God then made the great sea-beasts and all the live
things that move and swarm in the seas, each with their kind, and each kind
of bird; and God saw it was good. So he blessed them and said, "Have kids
and grow, fill all the seas; and let the birds grow on the land." Eve came,
and dawn, a fifth day.
God said, "Let the earth bring forth live things, each with their kind:
cows, scaled things, and wild beasts, all with their kind." So it was; God
made wild beasts, cows, and all the scaled things, each with their kind; and
he saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man look as we look,
to rule the fish in the sea, the birds of the sky, the cows, all wild beasts
on earth, and the scaled things which crawl on the earth." So God made man
look as looked; in the shape of God he made him; male and fem he made them.
God blessed them and said to them, "Have kids and grow, fill the earth and
take it, rule the fish in the sea, the birds of the sky, and each thing that
moves on earth." God said as well, "I give you all plants that bear seed on
each part of the earth, and each tree that bears fruit which yields seed:
they shall be yours for food. All green plants I give for food to the wild
beasts, to all the birds of the sky, and to all scaled things on earth, each
thing that lives." So it was; and God saw all that he had made, and it was
quite good. Eve came, and dawn came, a sixth day.
